Introduction

Renee Hughes brings extensive experience and skill to her practice as an employment attorney. Whether drafting or negotiating a contract, litigating a non-compete or wage dispute, or advising an employer on personnel issues, she commits her legal skills to delivering high quality representation.

Renee’s extensive legal experience in employment law also includes advising employers, executives and professionals on matters involving:

  • Non-competition, non-solicitation, confidentiality, and trade secret agreements
  • Employee handbooks
  • Wage and hour matters, including commission issues and overtime compliance
  • Employment contracts
  • Severance agreements
  • Various personnel matters, including employee discipline, hiring, and firing
  • Discrimination matters, including Title VII, ADEA, FMLA, ADA, NLRA, ERISA compliance

Renee also represents employers in investigating and responding to complaints filed with the EEOC, the Department of Labor, and other state and federal agencies. She also conducts employment training on matters such as sexual harassment and other personnel policies for employers and their employees.

Renee has been named to Best Lawyers in America since 2013 in the categories of Employment Law – Management and Litigation – Labor and Employment. Since 2015, Renee has also been regularly named as a Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers Magazine and has been named to Super Lawyers’ lists of Top 50 North Carolina women attorneys, Top 25 Lawyers in Charlotte and Top 100 Lawyers in North Carolina.

In addition, Renee was voted by attorneys statewide in 2012 as North Carolina’s best employment lawyer in response to a survey by Business North Carolina Magazine. As a result, she is a member of Business North Carolina Magazine’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame and is included in that magazine’s Legal Elite edition each year.

Renee was also elected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, which reserves membership to less than one percent of all lawyers practicing in each jurisdiction. The Fellows is an honorary organization of attorneys, judges, law faculty and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated dedication to the welfare of their communities and the highest principles of the legal profession. Members are nominated by Fellows in their jurisdiction and elected by the Board of the American Bar Foundation.

A native North Carolinian originally from Wilmington, Renee graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1991 and from NCCU School of Law in 2002, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and Valedictorian of her class. Prior to law school, she worked with the Domestic Violence Shelter and Services in Wilmington as the Court Advocate for battered women and children. In her spare time, Renee enjoys domestic and international travel, spending time at the beach, attending yoga classes, spending time with friends, family and her church community, and watching Panthers football and Wake Forest football and basketball (go Deacs!).
