Cody was born and raised in Johnson City, TN, where he took up music at an early age. His passion for the arts led him all across the country, and eventually to East Tennessee State University, where he studied cello performance and composition. He was the principal cellist of the combined ETSU and Milligan College orchestras, and performed concerts with Grammy-winning artists like Edgar Meyer and Mark O’Connor as a member of the Johnson City Symphony.

After an exciting and successful career as a studio recording artist and stage performer, Cody decided to pursue his lifelong dream of practicing law. He was accepted to Wake Forest University School of Law as one of two Charley P. Rose Scholars for 2017. As a student he was President of the Wake Forest chapter of the American Constitution Society, Vice President of the Wake Forest Legal Hackers, and a Board Member of the Wake Forest Intellectual Property Law Student Association. Between school years he interned as a summer associate at law firms in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, performing work in civil litigation, criminal expunction, and business law.

To honor his late grandparents, Cody served in the Wake Forest Elder Law Clinic, which provided free legal services to low-income senior citizens. There he received an award from the North Carolina Bar Association for completing over 75 hours of pro bono legal work in a single semester.

As a 3L, Cody completed two highly selective externships: one was under the General Counsel of the UNC School of the Arts, where he advised on complex copyright issues in choreography and dance; the other was under the Wake Forest University School of Business, where he advised the C-suite of an internationally famous clothing company on how to draft and implement Diversity and Inclusion policies.

After graduating law school in 2020, Cody passed the North Carolina bar and worked for the North Carolina Department of Commerce as an Appeals Referee, helping to interpret and enforce provisions of the newly-passed CARES Act.

As an Associate Attorney for Ascension Law, Cody is excited to bring his unique and diverse experience to the Corporate Law team. He also plans to expand the firm’s intellectual property services.
